Funk Carioca!

We have a new face here on FKL this week. One that serves up something quite different from what we’re used to. Bringing in some fancy Rio stylized beats and bass is Dj C0rnelius from Singapore, with this awesomely crafted Baile-Funk mix. Here’s a short bio of the dude:

“DJ C0rnelius is the musical alter-ego of Irwan Abu Bakar, a full-time graphic designer and corporate whore by day. Exposed to a well diverse array of musical genres since young due to the varied musical choices of his elder brothers, his musical tastes were futher refined and expanded when he worked for UK music retailer giants, HMV as a customer service staff & buyer.

A trip to the now defunct Insomnia Club and watching local drum & bass heroes, Kiat & Ashidiq prompted him to get his hands dirty on DJ-ing. Counting influences from Radiohead to Smashing Pumpkins to Jurassic 5 to The Roots, he is at ease with whatever type of music there is, whether it is hip-hop or old-skool funk to drum & bass to Brazilian baile funk. His DJ heroes includes DJ Shadow, DJ Yoda, Diplo, Dieselboy, DJ Marky, James Zabiela and Norman Jay. DJ C0rnelius has graced the decks at Home Club (SG) and BaaBarBlackChic (SG).”

From Rio To Toa Payoh is furiously smooth and impeccably tight. Featuring tunes from the likes of DJ Sandrinho, DJ Edgar, MC Vanessinha and even a superb Diplo rework of M.I.A’s ‘Galang’. This will bring out the Samba demon in you!! Booties will shake!!

Sometimes, super-heroes like putting down their capes and cowls to try something a little different. Like getting some sun and a boost in Vitamin D. In similar fashion, FKL super-ambassador Shahril Adnan (secret id: Zaskar) returns with a deep, soulful, funky, house set that showcases yet another facet of this very talented individual.

Expect some really soothing, feel-good grooves, tinged with sexiness from names like Riva Starr, Joris Voorn, Add2basket, Claes Rosen and Rain People. Homeboy makes you wanna put on some flip-flops and take a stroll on the beach with this one. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

When being lost is a good thing

These mixes have been sitting in cryo-freezer for quite sometime until Radzy brought them to my attention. So with that, we’re gonna put up 2 mixsets from our good friend from Loops Collective and the driving force behind KL’s massively popular Liquid Jump Up nights - AnOwl.

Some obviously fall through the cracks…

Why? Not enough Love.

Allow me to do a tad bit of email consultation for all of you. I do this for a living but because I’m in a generous mood, I’m gonna offer some advice - pro bono. Thank me by EXCLUDING me from ANY form of event notification. Please.

Here’s a great example from Love International that never made it to my eyes, until by accident, noticed it peeking out from under some Viagra spam. Behold:

So for budding email writers who are looking to maximize their list capabilities for events, here are some guiding tips on what NOT TO DO:

1. Chill out on the CAPSLOCK KEY

SCREAMING AT PEOPLE LIKE THIS IF YOU ARE TRYING TO CREATE ATTENTION really serves very little purpose. UNLESS YOU ARE F**KING SICK OF GETTING SPAMMED. Thankfully filters are capable of keeping these nasties out of your inbox. You’d think that people would get that by now.

2. HTML Grossness

Uh. Why risk it? Most HTML and image heavy emails are gonna slam straight into most junk filters. Don’t bother. Plain text just works and if you can’t communicate in writing, then there’s really no point using email.

3.Too too too many links links links

The more links, the more junk mail assassins are going to redirect your carefully crafted communication straight into the poo-poo pile. Your email is to communicate an event, it’s not the yellow pages.

4. Trigger words

… like ‘SECRET’ and ‘Buy’ and ‘Free’ are not good for your emails. Just look at the trashy penis enlargement emails that end up in your spam filter and pick out trigger words that are going to compromise your communication.

5. Unsubscriptions

(Doesn’t really anything to do with spam filters — but it’s still annoying.)

Make your unsubscribe links are clearly visible and MAKE SURE THEY WORK. I’ve tried unsubscribing from this list for close to the 5th time now and still nothing. In fact, I might report this as unsolicited email to their ISP… just because I still get these newsletters.

So keep these tips in mind next time you’re crafting your next brilliant event invite and with some know-how you would find yourself with many more interested readers.

And always keep the primary objective in mind: larger open rates = larger response rates. But we’ll get down to that another day.

PS: If you are REALLY interested in trying out some proper software that can fix all these issues FOR you - then I would really suggest e-filtrate. I’ve been using this for almost a year now and my arrival rates have always been awesome.

EJ returns with a wonderfully tailored Deep House set that invokes a surreal, almost Bohemian, imagery. I swear I could almost picture myself wandering thru some really artsy place pondering about Dada and Fluxus, on a rainy day. Yeah, it was that good!

Featuring the minimalistic and colourful works of Dennis Ferrer, Djuma Soundsystem, Mr.V and Trentemoller, amongst others, EJ showcases her versatily and superb deck skills, binding each track with absolute cosmic brilliance.

Liquid Jump Up 1st Anniversary

KL’s premier DnB night is turning one! And our friends from Loops Collective are throwing a party to celebrate. Duh! What else would you expect? Mark your calendars - July 12, 2008. Curiouser & Curiouser

By Shiva’s locks! I have not had this much Psy in a LONG time! No, scratch that. I have not had this much awesome-butt-kicking Psy in a long time! The following is a presentation of what happens when you take three psy-nuts and one very special guest and let them throw an event.

First things first. Massive congratulations to the Epic Tribe and the FKL Trimurti for throwing an insanely successful event! The turnout far exceeded expectations. Proxy Metatron, TheSuperGlo, Ydzar and special guest Fantapsy of Shaman Films put on one hell of a show. Plus the decor and artwork by Cozmic Rainbows, headed by Sherein, were astounding! We have more than 3 hours worth of transcendental euphoria from the night (JK was unable to record his set unfortunately -booo!)

So, I’m gonna stop yakking now and let you guys have it!
